A walker's and cyclist's paradise!
Co. Mayo offers plenty of planned trails and guided walks are available in various locations. Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, Slievemore and Croaghaun on Achill Island, Clare Island, Nephin Beg Range, the Western Way, the Foxford Way and the Bangor Trail, the wild North Mayo Cliffs - are just some of the many outstanding walking trails and areas.
The Lettermaghera Loop (picture) on the lower slopes of the Nephin Beg Mountains is a easy 10 km Loop Walk which begins 3km west of Newport - only a few minutes from the house.
The cottage is only a short drive from the starting points of this and other Loop Walks between Newport and Mulranny. For more leisurely walks try the quiet country lanes, the river and coastal walks near our house.
The Great Western Greenway is the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland. Following the old Westport / Achill railway line (which closed in 1937), this 42km traffic-free route is ideal for getting out on a bike and experience this spectacular landscape away from road traffic.
We have bicycles you can use for free (use at your own risk!), bicycle hire is available in several locations in Westport and Newport.
Swimming
Several Blue Flag beaches are around the clear waters of Clew Bay - the Mulrany Beach and the famous beaches of Achill, Keem and Keel, on the North Side are all in easy reach.More beautiful beaches can be found on the South side of the bay between Westport and Old Head, Louisburgh.
Angling
Our area is a true angler's paradise. Ballinlough Lake is just 2 km from the house, various other lakes and rivers are closeby. Kilmeena pier on Clew Bay is a good spot for shore angling. Various operators for deep sea, game and coarse angling offer their services throughout the year.
